Women's Tennis Defeats Army, 5-2

The University of Denver women's tennis team opened its 2001-02 home schedule with a 5-2 victory over Army. The match was played indoors at Heather Ridge Racket Club in Aurora.

The Pioneers swept all three matches at doubles to open the contest. At No. 1 doubles, freshmen Yanick Dullens (Susteren, Netherlands) and Barbara Kourim (Dallas, Texas) defeated Army's top tandem of Anne Collier and Ali Rohr, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, junior Rossi Thomas (W. Vancouver, B.C.) and sophomore Beth Messaros (Gahanna, Ohio) topped Melissa Sentelle and Melanie Bundoc, 8-4. Denver completed the doubles sweep on the third court as freshmen Stephanie Ginsburg (Englewood, Colo.) and Elizabeth Matthews (Jackson, Tenn.) defeated Marissa Limsiaco and Maelynn Bernosky, 9-7.

Dullens, Kourim, Ginsburg and Matthews also picked up victories at singles, leading the Pioneers to the win. At No. 1 singles, Dullens defeated Collier, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. Kourim topped Rohr at No. 2 singles in straight sets (6-4, 6-0), while Ginsburg won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over the Black Knights' Sentelle. Matthews sealed the match win at No. 4 singles with her victory over Bundoc, 6-1, 6-3.

Denver (2-2) will remain at home to host Air Force Saturday, Feb. 16 at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. The match is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
