Women's Tennis Defeats Montana, 5-2

The University of Denver women's tennis team defeated Montana, 5-2, Sunday (Mar. 31) at Denver's Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. The win improves the Pioneers' record to 8-6 overall.

The team's opened the match on the singles courts with Denver winning four of the six. After losing at No. 1 singles, Denver freshman Yanick Dullens defeated UM's Molly Sanders, 6-3, 6-2, on the second court. At No. 3 singles, freshman Stephanie Ginsburg topped Grizzlies' Annabelle Janairo, 6-2, 7-6. The win was the fourth-straight for Ginsburg as she improved her singles record to 10-8 on the season. Following Denver's second loss on the fourth court, freshman Elizabeth Matthews defeated Montana's Ashid Fjeldheim, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Denver's fourth win at singles came on the sixth court as junior Rossi Thomas beat UM's Megan Fisher, 6-1, 6-0.

Denver also earned the doubles point, winning on both the first and second courts. At No. 1 doubles, Dullens and freshman Barbara Kourim defeated UM's top tandem of Sarah Blain and Janairo, 8-3. That win was the fourth-consecutive victory for Denver's No. 1 pair and improved the tandem to 13-8 on the year. On the second doubles court, Ginsburg and Thomas teamed to defeat Montana's Torgerson and Michaela Zina, 8-0.

The Pioneers (8-6) will remain home for two matches this week. Denver will host Colorado State Wednesday (Apr. 3) at 2 p.m., before closing the home slate with Metro State Friday (Mar. 5) at 2 p.m.
