The University of Denver women's tennis team defeated Wyoming, 5-2, Saturday (Mar. 9). The match was played indoors at Heather Ridge Racquet Club after being moved from Denver's Stapelton Tennis Pavilion due to inclement weather.
For the first time this season, the Pioneers swept all three doubles matches. On the first court, freshmen Yanick Dullens and Barbara Kourim defeated UW's Jenny Bowman and Jennifer Hancock, 9-7. At No. 2 doubles, junior Rossi Thomas and freshman Stephanie Ginsburg topped Yuliani Santi and Paulina Del Monte, 8-4. Denver completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 as junior Maru Altamirano and freshman Elizabeth Matthews beat Katalin Gyulai and Toni Terhar, 8-4.
Through the first half-hour of the match, it looked as though Denver would fall as the first five courts saw Pioneers' trailing. The third court was the first to finish as Ginsburg pulled out a 7-6(4), 7-5 victory over Hancock, followed by Thomas's 6-4, 6-2, win over Terhar on the fifth court. Following Pioneer losses at No. 4 and No. 1, the match was again up for grabs. On the second court, however, Kourim pulled off a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Sonti, while Altamirano defeated Gyulai, 6-4 and 6-1 to secure the win.
Denver (5-4) will take a 10-day break before heading to Miami, Fla., for three matches, Mar. 19-23. The Pioneers will face Sun Belt Conference foe Florida International Tuesday, March 19, Northern Iowa (Mar. 21) and Boston College (Mar. 23) on the trip to Florida.
