PALO ALTO, Calif. - Claire Calzonetti scored a game-high four goals and the Stanford women's lacrosse pulled away with a strong second half as the Cardinal defeated the University of Denver, 14-7, in Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League action Sunday afternoon at New Maloney Field.
First-year midfielder Melissa Holecheck (Hurlock, Md. / Sts. Peter & Paul HS) scored two goals for Denver (4-9, 3-5 MPLL), marking the ninth straight game in which she has found the cage. She now has 19 on the season, which is second on the team.
Denver took a 6-5 lead at the half, yet Stanford (6-6, 6-0 MPLL) outscored the Pioneers by a staggering 9-1 margin in the second half to pull away with the win.
Senior Sarah Hazard (Owings Mills, Md. / Maryvale Prep) had 17 saves, and first-year Courtnay Gerl (Palm Beach, Fla. / Northfield Mt. Hermon HS) controlled a season-high eight draws.
Sophomore Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md. / Vermont Academy) scored her team-leading 24th goal of the season, and first-year Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore HS) ran her point-scoring streak to five games with her 17th goal.
"Stanford really took it to us in the second half," said head coach Abby Burbank. "We controlled the ball great in the first half, and Stanford controlled it in the second. Sarah Hazard was great for us and made a lot of point-blank saves, and Courtnay Gerl was excellent off the draw. "
The Pioneers are off from competition until next Friday, April 26, when Denver hosts Colorado College at 7 p.m. on Pioneer Field. The program will honor Denver's three seniors: Megan Bader (Aurora, Colo. / Eaglecrest HS), Dominique Cook (Morrison, Colo. / Colorado Academy), and Sarah Hazard.
