Stanford Doubles Up Denver Women, 16-8

April 6, 2002

DENVER - Despite a pair of hat tricks from sophomore Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md. / Vermont Academy) and junior Mariana Spry (Nashua, N.H. / Nashua HS), the University of Denver women's lacrosse team was defeated 16-8 by Stanford University in Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

Baldwin's first goal tied the game up at 4-4 with 4 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first half, yet the Cardinal (4-6, 4-0 MPLL) went on a 7-0 scoring binge that spanned halftime and the first 3:18 of the second period. Stanford took an 8-4 lead at the break, and out-scored the Pioneers 8-4 in the second half as well.

Julia Calzonetti scored four goals to lead Stanford, while Kelsey Twist added three. Five different Cardinal had at least two goals.

Senior Dominique Cook (Morrison, Colo. / Colorado Academy) and first-year Melissa Holecheck (Hurlock, Md. / Sts. Peter & Paul HS) also scored for the Pioneers (3-7, 2-3 MPLL), who have lost their last three conference games after starting out 2-0 in the first-year league.

The Pioneers continue their two-game MPLL homestand on Sunday when Denver hosts St. Mary's (Calif.) in a 1 p.m. game at Pioneer Field.
