DENVER - The University of Denver men's tennis team completed its weekend homestand in fine fashion with a 5-2 win over the University of Portland on April 5 at Meadow Creek Racquet Club. The victory completes a three-match weekend sweep for the Pioneers, who have won five straight matches overall. The Pioneers defeated Arkansas-Little Rock, New Mexico State and Portland this weekend for the first time in school history. Denver improved to 14-6 overall with the win.
"We had a great weekend against some quality opponents," head coach Geoff Young said. "The weekend sweep gives us a tremendous boost heading into the stretch run of our season."
The Pioneeers won four singles matches and the doubles point for the decisive win. Urban Ljubic (Jr., Ljubljana, Slovenia), Hans Peter Gaber (Jr., Anger, Austria), Viktor Zetterholm (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden) and Jason Tan (So., Monnickendam, Netherlands) won their respective singles matches for DU. Gaber continued his amazing singles winning streak with his 16th consecutive win with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Quinn Borchard at No. 3 singles. Ljubic won 20th match of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Peter Malacek at No. 1 singles. Zetterholm and Tan each won two of three singles matches over the weekend.
Bob Matteson (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and Brian West's (Fr., Houston, Texas) win at No. 3 doubles clinched the doubles point for Denver. The duo won 9-8 against Ty Garrison and James Redpath.
The Pioneers (14-6 overall) will Colorado on Tuesday, April 6, at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
