DENVER - Lakewood, Colo. native Abbi Hills scored six goals as the Stanford Cardinal shot-down the University of Denver women's lacrosse team, 16-5, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Sunday (March 28) at Pioneer Field. With their fourth-consecutive loss the Pioneers fall to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF. Stanford improves to 6-4, 4-0.
Megan Burker notched three goals and one assist, while Julie Calzonettie and Michelle DeChant each scored two goals for the Cardnial, who clinch the number one seed in this season's MPSF Championship.
Stanford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with 28:37 to go in the first half but junior attacker and Tara Bourdelaise (Gambrillis, Md.) would score for Denver to tie the match at 1-1. The Cardinal would score seven goals over the next 15 minutes to take control of the match.
Senior midfielder Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) stopped Stanford's run with two consecutive goals of her own. The Cardinal responded with two more goals to close out the half. Junior defenseman Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) added the half's last tally, pulling Denver to within six (10-4) at the half.
Stanford held the advantage in the second stanza of action, as it opened the half with three goals. Freshman midfielder Kate Broderick (Chantilly, Va.) answered back for the Pioneers, scoring her fifth career goal with 9:56 remaining in the match.
The Cardinal notched three more goals in the final nine minutes to walk away with the victory.
Baldwin registered two goals for the Pioneers, who were outshot by the Cardinal, 48-17. Bourdelaise, Jack and Broderick each recorded goals for Denver.
Christina Saikus picked up the win in the cage for Stanford, registering 10 saves.
Junior goalkeeper Steph Schneider (Leesburg, Va.) suffered the loss in goal. Her 23 saves rank tied for third all-time on Denver's single-game record chart. Her 26 saves at Cal earlier this season (Feb. 22) rank first all-time.
The Pioneers are next in action on Friday, March 2, when they travel to back to College Park, Md., to face-off against the Maryland Terrapins at 2 p.m. MT. The match will mark the homecoming of first-year Denver coach Cathy Nelson Reese.
