LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Meredith Wright registered 11 points on five goals and six assists and Andrea Paraud added six goals to lead the Bison to a 23-7 rout of visiting University of Denver women's lacrosse team Saturday night at frosty Graham Field. With their six-consecutive loss, the Pioneers fall to 3-7 overall. Bucknell improves to 5-4.
Bucknell led 9-6 in the early moments of the second half before tearing off 14 of the game's final 15 goals.
The Bison raced to a 5-0 lead behind two goals each from Paraud and Wright and one from Amy Hasler. But after being held scoreless for the first 20:36 of the contest, Denver battled back with goals from sophomore midfielder Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.), senior midfielder Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) and junior attacker Tara Bourdelaise (Gambrills, Md.), all in a 1:04 span to cut Bucknell's lead to 5-3.
Bucknell still led by two at 6-4 when Emily Burman scored back-to-back goals. Paraud's tally off a Wright feed from behind the cage with only three seconds left in the half gave Bucknell a 9-5 cushion at intermission.
Baldwin cut it to 9-6 with an unassisted marker just 1:36 into the second half, but Hasler answered just over a minute later. A healthy 20-12 edge in draw controls gave the Bison a significant edge in time of possession, and they took advantage, scoring five goals in only 3:15 to break the game wide open.
Wright scored twice in 18 seconds to make it 13-6 with 24:22 to play and Katie Edge and Hasler tacked on two more for a 15-6 lead at the 17:25 mark. Junior defender Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) scored after a long run to stop the bleeding temporarily for the Pioneers, but Bucknell scored eight times in the game's final 11:51 to make it a blowout.
Baldwin and Greenlees led Denver with two goals each. Junior goalie Steph Schneider (Leesburg, Va.) made 11 saves as Denver was outshot 40-19.
The Pioneers return home for their next two contests, hosting Regis on Wed., April 14, and St. Mary's (CA) on Fri., April 16. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
