LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The University of Denver men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to No. 74 Colorado, 6-1, last night at Meadow Creek Club in Lakewood. CU captured the doubles point and won five of six singles matches to claim the win. With the loss, Denver falls to 2-1 and CU improves to 2-1.
"We battled hard, but couldn't get the victory," head coach Geoff Young said. "I thought our guys played well, but CU was the better team tonight."
Freshman Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) claimed Denver's lone point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over CU's Marko Bundalo. Holmstromed improved to 3-0 in singles with the win. Holmstrom also teamed with Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) to win 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
"Adam is playing well for a freshman," Young said. "He and Niklas also upset the 33rd-ranked doubles team from CU."
CU won the doubles point after three close matches. Holmstrom and Persson defeated 33rd-ranked Marcos Digliodo and Chad Tsuda at No. 1 doubles. But, Viktor Zettterholm (Stockholm, Sweden) lost 8-3 to Marek Dvorak and Peter Bjork at No. 2, and Jason Tan (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) lost a tough 9-7 match to Dvorak and Jan Zelezny at No. 3.
Persson battled hard at No. 3 singles, but lost 10-4 in a super tiebreaker to Digliodo. Zetterholm played well in his three-set loss to Zelezny at No. 2 singles.
The Pioneers return to action on Feb. 4 with a match against Idaho State on Feb. 4 in Colorado Springs.
