Men's Tennis Defeats UC Riverside, 5-2

April 16, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of Denver men's tennis team improved to 8-11 overall with a 5-2 win against UC Riverside this afternoon in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Pioneers captured the doubles point and won four of six singles match to capture their second win in their last three matches.

Viktor Zetterholm (Stockholm, Sweden) clinched the match for Denver with a tough 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Riverside's Joe Cartledge at No. 3 singles. Zetterholm added a 9-8 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles with Jason Tan (Amsterdam, Netherlands) to complete a perfect day.

"I am really proud of the guys," head coach Geoff Young said. "The pace of play was really slow and it was hot, so the team had to really fight all day. It was a gutty win for us."

Steve Flaks and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) defeated Cartledge and Jordan Leo at No. 3 doubles to help Denver to the doubles win. Rosen also defeated Jeremy Owens 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles for the Pioneers.

Adding singles win for Denver were Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) at No. 2 and Tan at No. 4.

Denver returns to action tomorrow morning at No. 75 UC Santa Barbara.
