ALBUQUERQUE - The No. 73 DU men's tennis team posted a 4-3 win Friday over the Dons of San Francisco in a neutral site match in Albuquerque, N.M. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 on the season with the win.
"San Francisco was a good team," said head coach Geoff Young. "Although we did not play up to our potential, it was a good win for the team and hopefully we can step up our game tomorrow against New Mexico, who will be a big test for this team."
Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and partner Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated USF's Korbinian Kramer and Matthew Berry (USF) 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles position, while the No. 2 doubles team of Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ousted Mitch Del Rosario and Fernando Rodriguez by the same score to give the Pioneers the vital doubles point.
In singles, No. 28 Holmstrom defeated Berry 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while No. 92 Persson claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over San Francisco's Korbinian Kramer in the No. 3 spot. Rookie Aljosa Nipic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) tallied his first win of the year at No. 6 singles against Del Rosario by the score of 6-4, 6-2 to seal the win.
