ALBUQUERQUE - The No. 73 DU men's tennis team has won four straight matches after defeating New Mexico State 5-2 Sunday morning in Albuquerque. The Pioneers improve to 5-2 on the season.
"This was a great weekend for our team," said head coach Geoff Young. "For the first time, we have defeated three ranked teams in the season and with the three wins this weekend, we are playing very solid tennis right now."
The Pioneers once again captured the double point with all three teams recording wins. Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and partner Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Stjepan Beg and Brice Maganou 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and partner Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed suite, ousting Roman Stoisavljevic and Tim America 8-4. The No. 3 team of Aljosa Nipic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Viktor Zetterholm (Nacka, Sweden) got their first win of the season by the score of 8-4 over Christian Halligan and Jeff Pfeifer.
In singles, Zetterholm recorded Denver's first win at No. 5 singles, defeating America 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) returned to the DU singles lineup at the No. 6 position and defeated Pfeifer 6-3, 6-2. Similar to Saturday's match, it was Smole who once again sealed the victory for the Pioneers, beating Stoisavljevic 7-6(3), 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
In other results, No. 98 Persson fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 to the Aggies Maganou at No. 2 singles. No. 28 Holmstrom extended his record to 6-1 in the No. 1 singles spot, beating Beg 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, but Flaks was unable to come up with a win, falling 6-1, 6-7(8-6), 10-6 to Halligan. The Pioneers return to action Feb. 24 in Fort Worth, Texas to face TCU.
