BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's Lindsay Pieper scored with four seconds remaining in overtime as the Denver Pioneers dropped an 11-10 decision to Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Virginia Tech Lacrosse Stadium.
Pieper netted both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the game.
The Pioneers (2-1) scored five consecutive goals to take a 6-2 lead. Senior Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored the final goal in the stretch at the 7:56 mark of the first half.
Tech's (2-0) Natasha Fuchs, younger sister of DU's Tanya Fuchs and Kady McBrearty netted the final two goals of the half to cut DU's lead to 6-4.
DU scored three of the second-half's first five goals to extend the lead to 9-6 with 18:43 remaining in the game. The Hokies rallied back, scoring four of the final five goals in regulation. The Hokies cut the margin to 9-8 before Tanya Fuchs scored DU's last goal of the day with 4:09 left to put the score at 10-8.
VT scored the game's final two goals including Pieper's game-tying tally with just 47 seconds on the clock.
Sophomore Becky Childs (Phoenix, Md.) made nine stops in the cage for the Pioneers, while Carrie Hill made 14 saves for the Hokies. Each goalie made two key saves in the overtime period.
Junior newcomer Kristie Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had three goals to lead DU. For Tech, Natasha Fuchs and Pieper scored three goals each.
Up next, DU returns to action with a 5:30 p.m. MT matchup at Delaware on Tuesday.
