DENVER - The University of Denver women's tennis team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 7-0 rout of Minnesota Saturday evening at Monaco Athletic Club. The Pioneers tallied wins in all but one match for the win. With the loss, Minnesota drops to 0-3 on the season.
"Minnesota played a really tough match," said head coach Dana Young. "However, we came very focused and motivated, which was really reflected in the outcome. I was very pleased in the way we came ready for battle and played a very strong match at every position."
The No. 1 doubles team of Suzana Maksovic (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) was the only position that did not come out on top, falling 8-6 to Nischela Reddy and Ida Malmberg. However, DU still came out with the doubles point as Rachel Sackmaster (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) defeated Mariana Splica and Danielle Mousseau 8-4 and Lorinda Boothman (Naples, Fla.) and Marisa Mechem (Fredricksburg, Texas) ousted Marina Bugaenco and Shelby Rohrer by the same score.
In singles, Maksovic defeated No. 87 Reddy 6-1, 6-3 and Aksdal stayed perfect on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Spilca.
Up next, the Pioneers hit the road, closing out the month of February with four road matches. Denver begins its trek in Arizona, facing No. 14 Arizona State Feb. 11, followed by No. 59 Arizona Feb. 12. DU returns home March 4 hosting UAB at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
