No. 58 Pioneers Knock Off No. 34 Arizona, 5-2

DENVER - The No. 58 University of Denver women's tennis team defeated the No. 34 Arizona Wildcats 5-2 tonight at Pinehurst Country Club. The Pioneers won all three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to improve to 2-1 while Arizona falls to 1-2 on the season.

Sophomore Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and freshman Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) highlighted DU's doubles play with a win over No. 40 Danielle Steinberg and Juliette Mavroleon at No. 1. Also claiming wins were freshman Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) and sophomore Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) at No. 2 and senior Rachel Sackmaster (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Marisa Mechem (Fredericksburg, Texas) at No. 3.

In singles play, Aksdal (No. 1), Mechem (No. 3), Schnoy (No. 4) and Sackmaster (No. 6) all won their matches to give the Pioneers four singles points and the 5-2 victory.

"It was a great win over a ranked opponent," DU head coach Amy Jensen said. "Our team got after it tonight. We played really aggressive tennis, especially on the big points."

The Pioneers return to action Feb. 3 against Indiana State in Iowa City, Iowa.
