BOCA RATON, Fla. Florida Atlantic’s goal less than four minutes into the game was just enough, as the Owls beat the Pioneers 1-0 on Friday night.

FAU’s Alicia Tirelli crossed the ball from about 30 yards out, hitting teammate Susanna Lehtinen who one-timed it over sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.). The goal snapped a three-game shutout steak by Snyder.

“It’s disappointing to keep playing well and not put the ball in the back of the net,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “We really have the feeling that once we get one or two goals, more will follow.”

The teams waited out a 60-minute delay in the 34^th minute due to lightening.

This marked the first win for Florida Atlantic (5-4-1, 2-1-0 SBC) over Denver, as DU beat the Owls last season in the first two meetings between the schools. The Pioneers (4-3-3, 1-1-1 SBC) have scored only three goals in their past seven games.

Denver remains in South Florida to take on Florida International on Sunday.
