DENVER - The No. 45 University of Denver women's tennis was defeated by No. 48 Oregon 4-3 late Friday night at Pinehurst Country Club in Denver. The Ducks won the doubles point and three singles matches to improve to 5-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 4-2.
"We were just to charitable tonight," DU head coach Amy Jensen said. "We can't afford to give away free points, especially against the better teams."
Winning singles matches for the Pioneers were freshman Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) at No. 4, senior Rachel Sackmaster (Alpharetta, Ga.) at No. 5 and sophomore Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) by injury default at No. 6.
Claiming DU's lone doubles victory was the tandem of Sackmaster and Marisa Mechem (Fredericksburg, Texas) at No. 3.
The Pioneers return to action Feb. 17-18 in Minneapolis, Minn. The Pioneers play No. 71 Louisville Feb. 17 and Minnesota Feb. 18.
