Minnesota Downs Pioneers 6-1

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to cruise to a 6-1 win over No. 46 Denver in women's tennis action today at Baseline Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers improve to 4-2 with the win, while the Pioneers fall to 5-3 with their second loss in the last three matches.

Minnesota won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, before DU's Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) salvaged a win when Ida Malmberg and Danielle Mousseau retired due to injury.

Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) claimed DU's lone singles win and point with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Minnesota's Lindsay Risebrough at No. 2. Schnoy improved to 5-1 overall with her second consecutive win. Schnoy's only loss this season was to Oregon's Ana Cecilia Olivos in three sets.

Bauregger and Lorinda Boothman (Naples, Fla.) lost three set matches at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively. Bauregger was defeated by Tijana Koprivica 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 3, while Boothman was ousted 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 by Karina Chiarelli at No. 6.

The No. 46 Pioneers return to action at No. 3 Georgia Tech on Saturday, Feb. 24.
