Pioneers Defeat DePaul for First Win of Season

Denver, Colo.   The No. 47 Pioneers posted a 6-1 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons Saturday afternoon at the Pinehurst Country Club. Junior transfer Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) defeated DePaul's Dunja Autunovic 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles spot and picked up a doubles win with partner Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria).

 

Doubles started the match with two doubles victories to claim the doubles point. Voelker and Bauregger edged Autonovic and Gergana Ganeva 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) defeated Katarina Milinkovic and Anja Mihaldinec 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.  

 

DU picked up five singles victories to complete the match. Voelker defeated Autunovic 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) defeated Ganeva 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Aksdal picked up a win over Milinkovic 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Bauregger needed three sets to beat Selma Salkovic at No. 4. Freshman Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) rallied back to pick up her first victory as a Pioneer with a No. 5 win over Mihaldinec 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 and Smole fell to Kirsten Gambrell 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6.

 

With the win, Denver moves to 1-0 on the season. DePaul falls to 3-1.

 

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow afternoon against Penn State. The match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Pinehurst Country Club.
