Women's Tennis defeats Arkansas State

Denver Colo. The No. 41 Denver Pioneers continue their unbeaten season with a victory over Sun Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State 6-1 at the Pinehurst Country Club.

 

With the win, the Pioneers jump to an incredible 7-0 on the season. The Indians fall to 3-3.

 

Denver started the match strong by sweeping doubles play. Julia Bauregger (Klugnefurt, Austria) and Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) defeated Rone Van Wyk and Renee Branker 8-2 at No. 1. Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) picked up the second doubles win for the Pioneers over Leydi Zora and Emily Laing 8-4 at No. 3. Finishing the sweep was Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) over Paula Chelminska and Maria Oprea 8-6 at No. 2.

 

The Pioneers picked up five singles victories on top of the doubles point to finalize the score at 6-1. Bauregger downed Menna Kamal 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Aksdal defeated Van Wyk 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Voelker beat Oprea 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Schnoy came back from a 5-3 deficit in the first set to defeat Chelminska 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2. Iwinski entered the singles lineup for the first time this season and defeated Zora 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6 and Smole fell to Branker 4-6, 3-6.

 

Aksdal, Bauregger, Voelker, and Schnoy all improve to 7-0 in singles.

 

"We are all really focused on continual improvement,” Bauregger said. “We have had a great start to the season and some great wins early on. It’s challenging to do that but we are preparing to play our best tennis come the end of season.”

 

The Pioneers return to action on the road against BYU on Friday, February 22 in Provo, Utah. The match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
