USAFA, Colo. The No. 45 Pioneers won their fifth straight match of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 50 Washington State 7-0 at the Air Force Academy.
DU pulled out two doubles victories to capture the doubles point. Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Kaja Smole picked up the Pioneers’ first win of the night over Bianca Selaru and Marina Nicolas 8-1 at No. 3. Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) fell to Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova 8-3 at No. 1. With the doubles competition tied at one, Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) edged Aleksandra Stefanova and Aleksandra Cekic 9-7 at No. 2 to give Denver the 2-1 advantage.
The Pioneers swept singles play. Voelker edged Burduli 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 and Schnoy defeated Kamendova 7-5, 6-5 at No. 2. Aksdal beat Stefanova 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 and Bauregger picked up a win over Selaru 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. Tirumurti defeated Cekic 6-3, 6-0 and Smole picked up her second singles win of the season over Nicolas 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 6.
"These Pioneers make every practice and every workout count,” said head coach Amy Jensen. “We were tough in every position for every match this weekend.
It’s obvious that this group loves dual matches where they get to play
together as a team.”
With their third win of the weekend, the Pioneers advance to 5-0 on the season. The Cougars pick up their first loss of the season, making them 3-1.
DU travels to No. 65 University of Colorado next Saturday, February 9 for a 5:00 p.m. match.
