Pioneers Squeeze Past Colorado

Boulder, Colo. The No. 41 Denver women’s Tennis team picked up its sixth straight win defeating Colorado on the road this afternoon. The 4-3 win maintains Denver’s undefeated 6-0 record.

 

Denver started off the match behind, losing two of the three doubles matches as well as the doubles point. Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) fell to Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian 8-4 at No. 1. Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) picked up the only doubles win for the Pioneers with an 8-4 victory over Camila Belassi and Gleisy Torres at No. 2. With the doubles score tied at one each, Melisa Esposito and Abbie Probert edged Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) 9-7 at No. 3 to give Colorado the advantage.

 

Aksdal picked up the first singles point of the night for the Pioneers with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Esposito at No. 3 and Voelker defeated Milewski 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Bauregger came from behind to defeat Torres 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 4 and Smole fell to Nurmi 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6, setting the score 3-2 in favor of Denver. Schnoy came through with the 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Belassi at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Pioneers. Tirumurti was edged by Jendrian in the final singles match 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 5.

 

“Mallory, Ute, and Annette were impressive in singles today,” head coach Amy Jensen said. “Mallory set the tone by dominating Colorado’s top player. Ute was pushed to her edge and again proved that she has deep reserves. She is one of the toughest athletes I have coached.”

 

With the win, Denver improves to 6-0 on the season. The Buffalos fall to 1-4.

 

“Beating CU today was a great accomplishment,” said Voelker. “It has really motivated us to continue our undefeated season. Vamos Pios!”

 

Denver returns home to take on Arkansas State Saturday, Feb 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pinehurst Country Club.
