Pioneers Move Past Cal Poly

With the win, Denver moves to 14-0 on the season. The Mustangs fall to 10-7.

Denver picked up only one doubles win to begin the match, losing the doubles point for only the second time this season. Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) picked up the lone doubles victory for DU, defeating Maria Malec and Shannon Brady 8-4 at No. 2.

The Pioneers turned things around in singles play, sweeping all six matches to claim a 6-1 victory. Iwinski put Denver on the scoreboard with her win over Malec 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 and Julia Bauregger (Klugenfurt, Austria) followed with a victory over Diana Filip 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Schnoy tied the match at three each with her 6-2, 7-5 defeat over Whitney Peterson at No. 3 and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) clinched the win for the Pioneers  at No. 2 by downing Steffi Wong 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. No. 90 Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) extended Denver’s lead with her win over Brittany Blalock 7-6, 6-4 and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) came from behind to defeat Brady 2-6, 7-8, 10-8 at No. 5 to set the final score at 6-1.

“We feel like our fitness is a huge weapon at sea level,” Tirumurti said. “We used our physical toughness to tame the mustangs today. Vamos Pios!”

Voelker and Bauregger remain undefeated in singles at 14-0. Voelker received Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors last week.

The Pioneers continue their road trip through California on Tuesday, March 18 when they face No. 45 St. Mary’s. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. MST in Moraga, Calif.
