DENVER, Colo. The No. 24 Pioneer women’s tennis team defended its unbeaten record again this afternoon, defeating previously-unbeaten No. 38 Iowa 6-1 at the Pinehurst Country Club.
Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Julia Bauregger (Klugenfurt, Austria) got the ball rolling for Denver with their doubles victory over Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr 8-4 at No. 1. Soon after, Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) fell to Merel Beelen and Milica Veselinovic 8-3 at No. 2, bringing the battle for the doubles point down to the No. 3 position. Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) finished the job for DU, defeating Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Kelcie Klockenga 8-5 to clinch the doubles point.
Denver continued its momentum, winning the first three singles matches to seal the victory. Voelker defeated Lee 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, Bauregger downed Beelen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, and Schnoy clinched the win for the Pioneers with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Dorr at No. 3.
"I can’t emphasize enough how proud I am of this team,” assistant coach Thibault Schram said. “Discipline and professionalism were written all over today's match. The skills and character the ladies showed against North Texas yesterday really paid off today."
With the victory, Denver moves to a staggering 12-0 on the season. The Hawkeyes pick up their first loss, falling to 8-1.
Bauregger and Voelker each improve to 12-0 in singles. The two combine for the team-leading doubles record of 8-1.
