Pioneers Conclude Regular Season

RENO, Nevada  The No. 27 Pioneers women's tennis team snapped No. 41 Boise State's 11-match win streak with a 6-1 victory at Galena High School in Reno today. With the win, Denver improves to 19-2 while the Broncos fall to 17-5.

 

Denver captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. No. 35 Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Julia Bauregger (Klugenfurt, Austria) defeated Pichittra Thongdach and Polina Kokoulina 8-5 at No. 1 for Denver’s first victory of the afternoon. With the doubles competition tied at 1-1, Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) edged Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Bianca Jochimsen 9-8 to clinch the doubles point.

 

The Pioneers carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of the six matches. No. 73 Voelker defeated Thongdach 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 and Aksdal downed Kokoulina 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Bauregger defeated Stacey Housley 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4, Iwinski edged Jana Mackova 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 5, and Tirumurti downed Laura Baum 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.

 

“We were so ready for our last two dual matches of the season,” Bauregger said. “We didn’t want to cruise so we challenged ourselves to sprint right through the finish line. Vamos Pios!”

 

DU will travel to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament hosted by Louisiana-Monroe next weekend. Match play begins on Friday, April 18.
