Pioneers Upset Stanford, 13-9

Box Score

DENVER Junior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) scored five goals and dished out an assist to help the No. 20 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team upset No. 19 Stanford 13-9 on Senior Day at Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It marked Denver’s first win over Stanford at home and only the third win over the Cardinal out of 13 meetings.

“It was appropriate on senior day that all of our seniors stepped up, and having all of them in at the end of the game was great,” head coach Liza Kelly said. “It was big to beat Stanford. The worst we can finish now is second in the conference.”

Stanford (8-8, 3-2) started strong, scoring the first four goals of the game, holding Denver (10-5, 3-0) without a shot on goal for almost 17 minutes.

In the final 13:20 of the first half, though, the Pioneers caught fire, as Carver, junior Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) and sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) each scored a pair of goals to send Denver into the break with a 6-4 advantage.

The Cardinal started the second half with three quick goals to reclaim the lead, but DU stormed back, scoring seven unanswered goals over an 18-minutes stretch.

Senior goalkeeper Becky Childs (Phoenix, Md.) played the entire game, making eight saves including back-to-back shots at close range with just under three minutes to play to put the game away.

“Childs played an outstanding game,” Kelly said. “She came up with some big saves to stop Stanford from coming back.”

In the game, Morton had four goals, and junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) had a goal and two assists.

Carver recorded the six points despite missing the past three practices, as well as the game against UC Davis, due to illness.

Stanford was led by Claire Hubbard, who had two goals and three assists, while goalkeeper and Tewaaraton Trophy semifinalist Laura Shane had four saves.

The Pioneers complete their regular season on the road next weekend, taking on Cal in Berkeley, Calif, on April 26 at 2 p.m. and St. Mary’s in Moraga, Calif., on April 27 at 1 p.m.
