MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The No. 42 Denver men's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Sun Belt Shootout with a 4-3 win over UALR today at Buck Boldin Tennis Center. The Pioneers will play South Alabama in the finals tomorrow at Noon MT.
After receiving a first-round bye, DU improved to 14-4 by claiming the doubles point and three singles matches against UALR. Junior David Simson (Vienna, Austria) clinched the win with a three-set win at No. 3 singless, while senior Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) remained unbeaten in singles and doubles in DU's fourth win in five matches.
"We've played a lot of road matches this season and the guys gutted out another win," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "Adam is playing really well and we got contributions from all six guys today."
DU won the doubles point with wins by No. 3 Holmstrom and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) at No. 1 and Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) at No. 3.
No. 13 Holmstrom gave DU a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) made it 3-1 with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 4. Simson clinched the win with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Edson Abrao.
