SAN ANTONIO - The No. 28 Denver Pioneers opened their 2009 dual season with a 7-0 win over UTSA on Friday, Jan. 23 in San Antonio, Texas. The Pioneers swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in the big opening win.
Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) got things started with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position. Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria) and Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) won 8-2 at the top spot. Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) completed the sweep with their 8-3 victory at No. 2.
In was all Denver in the six singles matches. Iwinski put the Pioneers up 2-0 with her straight-sets win (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 5 slot. Schnoy then gave DU a 3-0 cushion with her 6-1, 6-2, triumph at the No. 3 position. Aksdal clinched the match for the Pioneers when she dealt Wallin a 6-3, 6-0, loss at the No. 2 spot.
The Pioneers (1-0) return to action today at No. 31 Texas A&M.
