DENVER - No. 39 Denver rallied for a 4-3 win over No. 58 BYU in women's tennis action this afternoon at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. DU lost the doubles point, but won four of the next five singles matches to increase its winning streak to seven matches.
“The adjustment we made between doubles and singles was huge," DU sophmore Christin Thompson (Larkspur, Colo.) said. "We worked really hard for this win today. We had to dig deep to pull it out.”
After losing all three doubles matches to the Cougars, the Pioneers rallied with singles wins from Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) at No. 2, Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) at No. 3 and Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) at No. 1 to take a 3-1 lead.
After Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) suffered a tough loss at No. 6 singles, Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) clinched the match with a three-set win over Elizaveta Ezhova at No. 5 singles for the important regional win.
DU (8-3) takes its seven-match winning streak to California for three big matches. DU plays No. 8 Cal on March 19, No. 25 Long Beach State on March 21 and No. 38 UC Irvine on March 22.
