BYU Edges DU, 4-3, in Women's Tennis

DENVER - The Denver women's tennis team put up a strong fight, but dropped a 4-3 decision to regional rival BYU late Friday night at Denver Country Club.

BYU won the doubles point and three singles matches to improve to 3-3. DU falls to 2-3.

"The match lasted six hours and we left it all out on the court today," DU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We competed extremely hard and played some great tennis tonight. If we continue to work hard, and compete like we did tonight, matches will fall our way later in the season."

BYU claimed the doubles point as No. 53 Megan Price and Callie Craig beat Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) and Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and  Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova beat Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) and Elena Najera (San Diego, Calif.) 9-7 at No. 2 singles. DU's Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) beat Aubrey Paul and Desiree Tran 8-4 at No. 3 singles.

Bergner improved to 4-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Price at No. 1 singles, while Najera beat Carney in three sets at No. 2 singles. Schnell recorded DU's other win with a two-set win over Ezhova at No. 5 singles.

DU hosts Tulane on Sunday, Feb. 13 at Pinehurst Country Club.
