DENVER - The University of Denver men's tennis team was edged 4-3 by New Mexico State in men's tennis action late Saturday night at CAC-Inverness. No. 41 Denv falls to 2-4 with the loss, while New Mexico State improves to 3-4.
"NMSU absolutely deserved this win," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "They played to win tonight and even when they were down, they continued to play on their terms. We have a lot of work to do if we want to achieve our goals. The good thing is it is very early and we have plenty of time to learn from this loss."
New Mexico State claimed four singles matches to gain the win. DU earned the doubles points and received singles wins from Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.).
Landwerlen and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) beat Jim Brouleau and Matej Stakne 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Weihs and Jonathan Kidane (Stockholm, Sweden) beat Luis Ramirez and Orlando Superlano 9-8 at No. 3 doubles.
Weihs beat Stakne 7-6(5), 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Landwerlen ousted Superlano 7-6 (5), 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
Denver returns to action at Arizona on Feb. 20.
