DU Beats In-State Rival CU, 4-3

DENVER - The University of Denver women's tennis team ended a four-match losing streak with a 4-3 win over in-state rival Colorado tonight at Pinehurst Country Club.

The Pioneers improve to 4-7 overall with the win, while the Buffaloes fall to 3-6.

"It was a great effort by our whole team today," DU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We rewarded ourselves with a win over our in-state rival Colorado after a great effort. Each match was extremely close and we were able to put together four points as a team. I am most happy with how hard that we competed and dealt with adversity after losing a difficult doubles point."

After CU clinched the doubles point, DU rallied for four singles wins to post its first dual win since Feb. 13.

Freshman Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) beat Winde Janssens 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to tie the score at 1-1.

Freshman Elena Najera (San Diego, Calif.) gave DU a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Abbie Probert at No. 2 singles.

After CU's Kristina Schleich beat Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) in three sets at No. 1 singles, DU regained a 3-2 lead when Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) beat Michala Hedelund Jensen 2-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ania Anuszkiewcz at No. 6 singles.

DU plays at Texas Tech on Sunday, March 6.
