Box Score DENVER - The University of Denver women's lacrosse squad fell 13-3 to No. 3 North Carolina on a chilly Monday evening at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Denver (1-5) got goals from redshirt sophomore Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.), junior Melissa Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and junior Becca Steinberg (Millersville, Md.). Senior Kelsey McDowell caused three turnovers for the Pioneers, and junior Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.) made seven saves in the loss.
The Pioneers had scoring opportunities in the opening session, but fell behind 1-0 early. North Carolina (4-2) scored two more times before Secora got the Pioneers on the board with a free position goal at the 9:07 mark. Denver outshot UNC 11-8 in the first half, but North Carolina scored three of its five first half goals from free position shots, and the Pioneers trailed 5-1 at intermission.
Denver tallied two more goals in the second half, but the Tar Heel offense scored eight times in the final 30 minutes.
UNC outshot DU 24-17 in the game, but Denver won the ground ball battle 12-11. The Tar Heels were 4-of-11 on free-position shots and Denver was 2-of-4.
Corey Donohoe and Laura Zimmerman led UNC with four points each. Zimmerman and Taylor Chumney forced three turnovers each for the Tar Heels, and Lauren Maksym made eight saves in the win.
