MOBILE, Ala. - No. 4 seed Middle Tennessee upset No. 1 seed Denver 4-3 in the semifinal round of the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championship Friday night at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The Blue Raiders advanced to the championship match and will face No. 3 South Alabama for the conference title. Match time is set for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of South Alabama.
Middle Tennessee and Denver split the first doubles matches, but Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) secured the point for Denver by beating Ben Davis and Shaun Waters 8-4 at the No. 1 position.
Kyle Wishing made it 1-1 by handling Angel Alvarez (San Antonio, Texas) 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.
Denver answered back when Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) gave the Pioneers a singles point with a defeat over Shaun Waters 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Elliot Barnwell tied the score at 2-2 with a singles victory in three sets over Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Matthew Langley gave Middle Tennessee a 3-2 lead with a three-set victory over Vorkefeld at the No. 3 position.
The Pioneers then tied the score at 3-3 when No. 65 Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) took down Davis 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position.
Dmitri Pippos clinched the match for MT with a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Landwerlen at the No. 4 singles position.
