BOISE, Idaho - The University of Denver women's tennis team opened the 2012 spring dual season with a 6-1 win over Utah State Saturday afternoon at Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho.
DU swept three doubles matches and claimed five of six singles matches to improve to 1-0. Utah State falls to 0-2.
"It is great to start the season with a win," DU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We were able to play well at all spots. We look forward to a great opportunity to play a ranked Boise State team at their courts Sunday."
The doubles tandems of Elena Najera (San Diego, Calif.) and Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany), Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) and Madeleine Saari-Byström (Uppsala, Sweden) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) were all victorious.
Bergner beat Jaci West 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Najera beat Kristina Voytsekhovich 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Isberg beat Romina Nedakovic 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Rath defeated Julie Tukuafu 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Dunn closed out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Monica Abella at No. 6 singles.
The Pioneers play Boise State (1-0) Sunday at 9 a.m. MT.
