Pioneers defeat Rams, 5-2

DENVER - The University of Denver women's tennis team continued its winning ways on Saturday at the Colorado Athletic Club Monaco. The Pioneers defeated in-state rival Colorado State 5-2.

Denver (4-0) began the night topping the Rams in doubles play and finished with four singles victories to start 4-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Rams start their season 0-1.

Denver's doubles pairings of Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) and Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany), Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) and Elena Najera (San Diego, Calif.) and Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) swept the doubles competition for the second-straight night.

In singles, the Pioneers won four of the six matches. In No.1 singles, Bergner defeated CSU's Tori Arneson 6-3, 6-0. Playing in the No. 2 spot Najera defeated Lauren Mulhern 6-4, 6-0.

The Crimson and Gold dropped matches in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Schnell lost in a super tiebreaker to Natalie Heffron, 2-6, 6-2, (10-8). Isberg dropper her match to CSU's Kaley Shultz in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Rounding out the night for the Pioneers were match wins from Rath and Dunn in the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively. 

DU returns to action on Sat., Feb. 4 against Arkansas State at CAC Monaco. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. MT.
