DENVER - The University of Denver women's tennis team defeated No. 64 Wichita State Sunday in Wichita, Kan., 4-3.

The Pioneers tied Wichita State in singles play, 3-3. Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) defeated Wichita State's Lucia Kovalova 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles. Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) fell to Rebecca Pedrazzi 6-0, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) beat Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul 6-1, 7-5, Mandy van den Eerenbeemt (Best, Netherlands) claimed victory over Carla Venticinque who retired after trailing 6-1, 3-0, Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) fell to Montse B. Fernandez 6-2, 6-3, and Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) lost in three sets to Julia Schiller, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.

The Pioneers claimed two of three doubles matches. Bergner and Rath defeated Kovalova and Blaskova 8-1 and Schnell and Derbyshire clamied a 9-7 victory over Fernandez and Mahajaroenkul.

Denver returns home Friday, Feb. 8 to take on Colorado. The match will take place at Monaco Athletic Club at 7:00 p.m.
