LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Denver No. 57 women's tennis team defeated Utah State 6-1 on Saturday in Las Cruces, N.M. The win improves the Pioneers to 7-0 in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play and 14-3 overall
The Pioneers won all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead.
In singles, senior Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) beat Utah State's McKenzie Davis 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. Senior Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) defeated Kristina Vytoekovich 6-2, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. Sophomore Mandy van den Eerenbeemt won with a 5-2 lead after Julie Tukuafu was forced to retire. Freshman Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) continued to thrive in singles play by defeating Kallie Sperry 4-6, 6-2, (10-1) in No. 5 singles. Senior Steffi Rath(Höchst, Austria) took down Hillary Hays 6-2, 6-3 to help the Pioneers claim the 6-1 victory.
The ITA-ranked No. 57 Pioneers' next match is Sunday at 10 a.m. against New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.
