Denver Women's Tennis Beat at Home by Wichita State

DENVER- The No. 57 University of Denver women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 54 Wichita State 4-3 on Saturday at the Colorado Athletics Club- Monaco in Denver.

Denver is 2-6 overall following the loss, while Wichita state improves to 8-2.

“Overall it was good match,” head coach Christian Thompson said. “Wichita State is a very solid team. And we fell just short.”

Though Pioneer duo Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) and Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) claimed a 8-7 win against Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova in the No. 1 spot, Wichita State came away with the doubles point.

The rest of the match was a close fight. Radosevic was able to quickly beat Lucia Kovalova (WSUW) 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) and Hughes also posted singles wins for Denver. Van Genechten first defeated Montse B. Fernandez 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot and Hughes battled through three sets to beat Abby Stevens 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. The match came down to the No. 1 spot where Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) was edged out by Julia Schiller 6-2, 7-5.

University of Denver women’s tennis plays again on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to face the University of New Mexico at 3 p.m., MT.
