ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The No. 70 University of Denver women’s tennis team defeated the University of New Mexico 4-3 in Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday.
Denver is 3-6 following the win, while New Mexico falls to 6-5.
Getting DU off to a good start, doubles tandem Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) and Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) posted a 8-3 win over Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers in the No. 1 spot. Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) clinched the point for the Pioneers, defeating Emily Olivier and Dominique Dulski 8-7 in the No. 3 spot.
The University of New Mexico took the first two singles matches, but then Radosevic claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Natasha Smith in the No. 3 spot. Next, Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) came out on top against Olivier 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot. Solidifying the win for DU was Slattery who battled back from a first set loss to beat Bezdickova 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot.
University of Denver women’s tennis is back in action on Saturday, March 1 when it plays against the University of Nevada Reno in Reno, Nev., at 11 a.m., MT.
