DENVER - The No. 71 University of Denver women’s tennis team defeated Western Illinois 7-0 on Saturday at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver.
“It was a good effort by the girls today,” assistant women’s tennis coach David Loewenthal said. “And we’re looking forward to finishing up the regular season tomorrow against Omaha. We’re taking some really nice conference momentum into the conference tournament next week.”
Denver improves to 11-8 overall and 5-0 in conference play following the win, while Western Illinois falls to 0-16 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
DU took the doubles point, winning three of three matches. Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) quickly won the No. 2 spot, defeating Jamee Hale and Andriana Johnson 8-0. Next tandem Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) posted an 8-1 victory over Ese Davis and Melissa Alger in the No. 3 spot. Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) and Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) garnered the last doubles match, beating Jenna Wallace and Nicole Jones 8-2 in the No. 1 spot.
The Pioneers won six of six singles matches in straight sets. Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) first claimed the No. 6 spot over Hale 6-0, 6-0. Then Dunn beat Alger 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot and Hughes netted a 6-0, 6-1 win against Johnson in the No. 3 spot.
Posting the final three Denver wins of the day were Van Genechten, Radosevic and Schnell. Van Genechten bettered David 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot, Radosevic came out on top versus Jones 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot and Schnell was victorious over Wallace 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot.
Denver women’s tennis plays its final regular season match on Sunday against Omaha at 9 a.m., MT, at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.
