Denver Women's Tennis Blanks Omaha

DENVER - The No. 71 University of Denver women’s tennis team defeated Omaha 7-0 in its final regular season match on Sunday at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver.

“I think we came out today much sharper than we did on Friday,” women’s head tennis coach Christian Thompson said. “It was a little bit of an emotional day with it being Senior Day. But we got the job done and I think a lot of the girls came out and really tried to give it their all for the seniors.”

Denver improves to 12-8 overall and 6-0 in conference play following the win, while Omaha falls to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The win solidifies Denver’s spot as the No. 1 seed going into The Summit League Championships next weekend.

The Pioneers got off to a strong start, winning three of three doubles matches. In the No. 3 spot, Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) posted an 8-3 win over Molly Matricardi and Jacqueline Baude. Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) and Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) took the No. 1 spot, beating Tiffany Hottman and Alex Tran 8-5. Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) claimed the final doubles win of the day against Hylan Miller and Kenzie Hill (8-3) in the No. 2 spot.

DU garnered six of six singles matches, five of which in straight sets. Wrapping things up quickly, Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) defeated Hill 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot and Van Genechten bettered Lindsay Weideman 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. Then, Schnell beat Tran 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.
