Follow Summit League Tennis Championship This Weekend Here

DENVER- The No. 1 seeded women’s and men’s University of Denver tennis teams will host The Summit League Championships April 25-27 at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.

Both Pioneer teams have earned a first-round bye. Denver’s men will play the winner of the IUPUI versus Western Illinois match on Saturday at 2 p.m., MT, while the women will face the winner of the IUPUI versus South Dakota match on Saturday at 10 a.m., MT.

The women’s championship match will take place at 10 a.m., MT, on Sunday and the men’s will start at 1 p.m., MT. If the Pioneers advance to the finals, the women will face No. 3 seed Fort Wayne, No. 6 seed Western Illinois or No. 2 seed South Dakota State. The men would play No. 3 seed South Dakota State or No. 2 seed Fort Wayne.

The winners of Sunday’s championship matches will earn an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Tennis Championships, which begin May 15. 

Both DU teams go into the weekend as the favorites to take conference title after posting perfect league records during the regular season.

Denver’s men finished 5-0 in conference play, while the women posted a 6-0 record in The Summit League.

2012-13 WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The University of Denver men’s team entered last season’s WAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and defeated Idaho 4-0 to capture the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship. DU then went into the NCAA tournament as a No. 4 seed and rallied from a 3-1 deficit to post a 4-3 win over No. 1 seed Florida and claim the program’s first-ever NCAA postseason win.

Also the No. 1 seed at the 2012-13 WAC championships, the Pioneer women defeated No. 8 seed New Mexico State and No. 5 seed Idaho to advance to the championship match. The Pioneers ultimately fell to No. 2 seed San Jose State 4-3 in the finals.

The 2013-14 Summit League Tennis Championships are open to the public and admission is free.
