Denver Women's Tennis Dominates First Conference Match

FORT WAYNE, IND.- The No. 68 University of Denver women’s tennis team defeated South Dakota 7-0 at Wildwood Racquet Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Friday.

“It was a solid performance today at every position,” head women’s tennis coach Christian Thompson said. “Our two seniors went 2-0 on the day in both singles and doubles. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s match against IUPUI.”  

Denver improves to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play following the win, while South Dakota falls to 8-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The doubles team of Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) claimed the first Pioneer win of the day beating Michelle Elkin and Milica Pavlovic 8-1 in the No. 2 spot. Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) clinched the doubles point for Denver, defeating Rymma Maslova and Yuliya Sidenko 8-2 in the No. 1 spot. Posting the last doubles victory were Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) who netted a 8-6 win over Yamini Reddy and Dragana Brankovic in the No. 3 spot.

Denver took the singles portion as well, sweeping every match in straight sets. In her first dual singles match of the season, Dunn came out victorious over Nina Barudzic 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. Playing in the top three spots, Slattery defeated Maslova 6-1, 6-0, Schnell posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pavlovic and Radosevic beat Sidenko 6-2, 6-1.

Solidifying the win for the Pioneers were Van Genechten and Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England). First Van Genechten was victorious against Reddy 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot, then Derbyshire bettered Brankovic 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot.

Denver women’s tennis will face its next conference opponent in IUPUI on Saturday at 11 a.m., MT, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
