PULLMAN, WASH. - The No. 70 University of Denver women’s tennis team was defeated 6-0 by No. 47 Washington State at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse in Pullman, Wash., on Wednesday.
Denver falls to 9-8 overall following the loss, while Washington State improves to 17-8 overall.
The Pioneers battled through three matches, but could not claim the doubles point. Denver duo Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) and Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) started things off right, beating Maria Biryukova and Olga Musilovich 8-4 in the No. 2 spot. Both Pioneer pairs of Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) pushed their competition to match points before coming up short.
In singles, Schnell and Radosevic fought to three sets. After losing the first set 6-2, Schnell claimed the second set against Biryukova 6-3, and fell 6-1 in the third in the No. 2 spot. Radosevic won her first set 6-3 versus Liza Leenknecht but then was defeated 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
Denver women’s tennis next hosts Fort Wayne, Western Illinois and Omaha April 18-20 at Gates Tennis Center.
