Feb. 14, 2015 DENVER - The No. 64 University of Denver women's tennis team (2-3) could not close out the No. 63 New Mexico Lobos (8-1) Saturday night. The Pioneers lost a heartbreaker, 4-3.
"The girls gave a tremendous effort today under tough circumstances," said Assistant Coach David Loewenthal.
The Pioneers won their third straight doubles point of the season with victories coming from junior Evy Van Genechten and sophomore Sonja Radosevic and the pairing of sophomore Morgan Barnhill and senior Michelle Garpenlov, 6-1 and 7-5.
Denver would win the first two singles matches making the score, 3-0. Freshman Julia O'Loughlin would earn the first victory, 6-1, 6-4 over Dominique Dulski. Radosevic would follow that up with a victory of her own, 6-2, 6-3 over Emily Olivier. That would be all for the Pioneers as the Lobos would win four straight to take the match.
"We lost today, but a match like this is going to pay off for us later in the season," said Loewenthal. "Very proud of the effort this weekend. This is a very special group of girls."
Denver will host two home matches next weekend as they welcome Nevada and Kansas on Friday February 20, and Saturday February 21.
