Feb. 21, 2015 DENVER- With blizzard conditions falling outside, the No. 65 Denver Pioneers (4-3) defeated No. 75 Kansas (3-5), 6-1 on Saturday night at the Colorado Athletic Club-Monaco.
The Pioneers swept the doubles to build an early lead. Junior duo Evy Van Genechten and Charlotte Derbyshire defeated Collins and Czapinski, 6-3. Sophomore Maureen Slattery and freshman Julia O'Loughlin defeated the Jayhawk pairing of Cardona and Luduena, 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
"These girls are a special bunch," said Assistant Coach David Loewenthal. "They embrace adversity, and overcome time and time again. The continued success in doubles has really helped our energy and momentum going into the singles."
Derbyshire would make the match, 2-0 after she defeated Collins, 6-3, 6-1. On court one Slattery would earn the third point of the match for Denver with a straight-set win over Cardona, 7-6 (3), 6-1. The match would be clinched when sophomore Morgan Barnhill defeated Czapinski in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
The Pioneers would cap off the victory with two more wins by O'loughlin, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1, and sophomore Sonja Radosevic, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"Thank you to the fans for coming out in the snowy conditions," said Loewenthal. "As well as the staff at CAC-Monaco for the continued support with our home matches. We look forward to hitting the road next week!"
The Pioneers will travel to Nebraska next weekend to face Omaha on Friday February 26, at Noon MT.
