Feb. 23, 2015 NASHVILLE, TENN.- After pushing the start of the game back one day, the Denver Pioneers and Vanderbilt Commodores met in the Multipurpose Facility in Nashville. The [19/20] Pioneers were victorious in the non-conference game, 13-9.
After falling into an early 3-0 deficit. The Pioneers (2-1) were on the attack, lead by seniors Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) and Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills Village, Colo). Remenapp added to her assist totals with two assists on the day. Her first assist on the day came 13 seconds before the end of the first half. Remenapp dished it to Rachael McKinnon (Brooklin, Ontario)for the last goal of the half. Boone tallied three goals on the day bringing her season total to six.
The Crimson and Gold forced 16 turnovers on the day, 11 of which came in the first half. Katherine Fischer (Upper Nyack, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with three caused turnovers.
Denver took a 7-4 lead into the locker room.
The second half featured a back and forth battle between the two squads. Vanderbilt mounted a late rally to close the deficit to two goals. The Pioneers defense stood tough only allowing nine shots in the second half. Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) while minding the net had seven saves. She also caused a turnover on the day.
Late in the second half reigning MPSF Rookie of the Week Nicole Martindale (Brooklin, Ontario) scored to make it a three goal game with just over two minutes remaining. After that Christa Reese (Lutherville, Md.) scored her second of the day off a Sarah Kasun (Bel Air, Md.) assist with just over a minute remaining in the game. These late goals would put the game out of reach for Vanderbilt and secure a DU victory.
"I am so proud of how hard the team worked today," said Head Coach Liza Kelly, "Our sideline was a huge part of today's win." "This was a long weekend of traveling for our team. It feels great to be leaving Nashville over a great Vanderbilt team."
The Pioneers will head back to Denver for their home opener at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium against [13/T15] Louisville. The game will be February 28th and is slated for a 1 pm MST.
