March 21, 2015 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 66 University of Denver women's tennis team (6-6) came to play against No. 23 Dartmouth (12-1), but fell just short of a major upset. The Big Green would win, 4-3.
Denver would fall behind early losing on doubles two and three. Sophomore Maureen Slattery and freshman Julia O'Loughlin would win the lone doubles match for the Pioneers, 8-5 over Ng and Mathis on court one.
"We have had a few opportunities this year where we have come up just short in matches not being able to capitalize on the doubles point," said Head Coach Christian Thompson. "This will be a major focus against UC Irvine on Sunday."
The Pioneers took it to the Big Green in singles play. Denver would tie the match at 2-2 with straight-set wins from sophomores Sonja Radosevic and Morgan Barnhill. Down, 3-2 O'Loughlin would win her ninth singles match in a row, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3 on court three. That would be the last for the Pioneers on the day against a stacked Dartmouth team.
"I have to give credit to Dartmouth as they played a solid match," said Thompson. "They made us earn points consistently on many courts. It was great to see we are improving in many areas and showing a top 25 team what we can do."
The Pioneers will finish out their spring break road trip, Sunday March 22, at UC Irvine beginning at 11:00 a.m. MT.
