Box Score April 10, 2015 SAN DIEGO, Calif.-- The University of Denver women's lacrosse team behind a career-high five goals from redshirt freshman Nicole Martindale (Brooklin, Ontario) downed the San Diego State Aztecs in MPSF action, 17-10 on Friday night, at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
Denver (8-3, 3-1 MPSF) playing its first road game since February 22, at Vanderbilt showed no signs of road rust as they jumped all over the hosts scoring the game's first eight goals in route to the victory. San Diego State (8-4, 4-1 MPSF) came into the game undefeated in conference play and at home.
"This team worked so hard to get better this week," head coach Liza Kelly said. "I think it really showed in tonight's game. I am really proud of how we performed as a team."
Denver came out firing on the road scoring early and often. Rachael Dillon (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) opened the scoring at the 28:30 mark and that was followed up by a Rachael McKinnon (Brooklin, Ontario) tally. Redshirt freshman Nicole Martindale (Brooklin, Ontario) scored a free position goal to put Denver up 3-0 just 6:48 into the game.
The Pioneers jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first half as seven different players scored.
The Crimson and Gold got goals from Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.), Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.), Katherine Fischer (Upper Nyack, N.Y.) and Sarah Kasun (Bel Air, Md.) in the first half.
Martindale finished the first half with five points (4 goals and an assist). Dillon added two goals and Remenapp a goal and two assists to round out the multi-point scorers for the half.
Denver took a 12-3 lead into halftime as San Diego State was able to score two goals in the final minute of the half.
SDSU opened the second half with the first goal scored by Lauren Maack. The Pioneers responded by scoring five of the next six goals as Boone added her second goal of the evening, followed up by Martindale's fifth of the night. Monica Lucas (Kensington, Md.) got in on the scoring with 21:17 remaining in the second half and that was followed up by Fischer's second of the night, which was assisted by Remenapp. Dillon got her hat trick with 14:48 remaining in the second half to give Denver a 17-5 lead.
The home team finished the game on a 5-0 run to make the final score, 17-10. Goaltender Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made five saves on the evening in net for DU, improving to 8-3 on the season. Sophomore Maddy Stevenson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) replaced Hook late in second half making her second appearance of the season.
The Pioneers will continue their road trip as they head north to take on the USC Trojans on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT. The game can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
Denver will then finish its road swing next week with games at California (April 17) and Saint Mary's (April 19). Denver then wraps up its 2015 regular season campaign in the Mile High City against Oregon (April 24) and Fresno State (April 26).
For the second-consecutive season, Denver will host the MPSF Championship from April 30-May 3 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Tickets to this event are currently available for purchase at the University of Denver ticket office.
